The controversial social-media personality Twene Jonas has finally come face-to-face with one of his most emotional subscribers, Blac Saviva, in town — and the encounter has generated plenty of reactions. 😂
Saviva: “Ahaaa… today I’ll show you how to respect your elders…” 😤
Jonas: “Oh, my car is right there oooh! Let me press the remote so you can see it!” 🚗🔑🤣
Beyond the comedy and drama, however, there is an important lesson here.
I personally do not support Twene Jonas insulting Ghanaian leaders in the name of criticizing their performance. Leaders can and should be held accountable, but criticism can be forceful without becoming abusive or disrespectful.
At the same time, I equally do not support Saviva allowing political emotions to influence how he confronts someone simply because he disagrees with that person’s opinions.
In every democracy, politicians will face criticism — constructive, harsh and sometimes unfair. Citizens will also disagree strongly about governments, political parties and national leadership. That is part of public discourse.
But disagreement on social media should never become an excuse for intimidation, threats or physical confrontation. Challenge opinions with opinions. Counter arguments with better arguments. 👌
You don’t have to support Twene Jonas to defend his right to express an opinion, and you don’t have to support a politician to demand that criticism remains respectful.
🇬🇭 Ghana needs passionate citizens, but passion must be guided by tolerance, wisdom and respect for different opinions.
