The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has appointed Prof. Yaw Ampem Amoako as its new Medical Director, with the appointment taking effect from 1 September 2026.
The appointment has now been independently confirmed by KATH’s official management page, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR).
Prof. Amoako succeeds Dr. Kwadwo Sarbeng, whose dedicated service as outgoing Medical Director has been acknowledged by KATH.
An Experienced Clinician, Researcher and Academic
Prof. Amoako comes to the position with extensive experience spanning clinical medicine, research, teaching and healthcare leadership.
Before his appointment, he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at KNUST’s School of Medicine and Dentistry and as a Senior Specialist Infectious Diseases Physician at KATH. He is also a Principal Research Scientist at KCCR, where he leads research activities involving neglected tropical diseases.
His professional qualifications include specialist training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. Ghana’s Medical and Dental Council register lists his qualifications as MBChB, MWACP, FWACP and FCNPSA, with his specialty identified as Internal Medicine (Infectious Diseases).
Significant Research Contribution
Beyond clinical practice, the new Medical Director has built a substantial research profile.
His work has covered diseases such as Buruli ulcer, scabies, podoconiosis and yaws, as well as chronic conditions including hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors.
KNUST says he participated in international clinical trials that contributed to changing Buruli ulcer treatment from injectable therapies towards fully oral antibiotic regimens. He has also participated in outbreak investigations and advised institutions including Ghana’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization on disease-control strategies.
Published scientific literature further demonstrates his longstanding association with KATH and his involvement in research covering infectious diseases, kidney disease and cancer in Ghana.
Joining KATH’s New Leadership Direction
Prof. Amoako assumes the position at an important period for KATH.
The hospital’s current management team is headed by Chief Executive Officer Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, with Prof. Amoako now serving as Medical Director alongside other directors responsible for finance, administration, nursing and midwifery, pharmacy, human resources and general services.
The Medical Director occupies a particularly important position because effective hospital management requires the integration of administrative leadership with clinical excellence, patient safety, research and medical training.
Prof. Amoako’s combination of frontline clinical experience, academic work and international research exposure therefore provides an opportunity to strengthen this relationship.
