A Ghanaian academic based in the United States, Dr Kofi Akamani, has died after being shot in Jackson County, Illinois, bringing a distinguished international academic career to a tragic end.
Dr Akamani, 48, was a Professor of Forest Recreation and Conservation Social Science at Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale. Deputies responded to a reported shooting at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 19. He was transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead.
Wife charged as investigation continues
Authorities have identified Betty Akamani, 35, as Dr Akamani’s wife. She was charged on Monday with two counts of felony first-degree murder and one count of endangering the life or health of a child, according to Heartland News, citing court records and the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors allege that Dr Akamani was shot multiple times while sitting in his vehicle in the driveway of the Murphysboro residence. The couple had reportedly been separated for about two years and were going through divorce proceedings. Betty Akamani was denied pretrial release and is expected back in court for a preliminary hearing on October 6.
The charges remain allegations. Betty Akamani is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until guilt is established in court.
SIU mourns respected professor
Southern Illinois University has expressed sorrow over the death of its faculty member.
SIU Chief Communications and Marketing Officer Jeff Harmon said the university had learned of Dr Akamani’s death “with a heavy heart” and extended condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and students.
The university’s Forestry community has also remembered him for his gentle demeanour, work ethic and positive attitude. A vigil was scheduled for Tuesday evening on the front lawn of SIU’s Agriculture Building, with a memorial service expected at a later date.
A remarkable educational journey
Beyond the circumstances of his death lies the remarkable story of a Ghanaian whose education eventually carried him onto the international academic stage.
Accounts shared with Moment of Wisdom GH TV about Dr Akamani’s upbringing describe a family of limited financial means. His father reportedly worked as a pantry man at Osei Tutu Secondary School and made considerable sacrifices to ensure that his son received an education.
Dr Akamani attended Cambridge International before proceeding to Osei Tutu Secondary School, where he studied science as a day student because of his family’s financial circumstances.
After O-Level, financial limitations reportedly affected his ability to proceed directly to A-Level education. He entered teacher training and subsequently worked as a teacher while continuing to pursue his academic ambitions.
He later obtained his A-Level qualification and eventually gained admission to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
His official SIU academic record states that he graduated from KNUST with a Bachelor of Science in Planning in 2003.
From Ghana to Norway and the United States
Dr Akamani’s educational journey subsequently took him beyond Ghana.
He obtained an MPhil in Culture, Environment and Sustainability from the University of Oslo, Norway, in 2006, before earning a PhD in Natural Resources from the University of Idaho in 2011.
He then built a distinguished academic career at Southern Illinois University.
His teaching and research focused on the relationship between people and the natural environment, including natural-resource management, rural-community sustainability, forests, water resources, conservation policy and communities’ ability to adapt to climate change and other pressures. His research covered communities in both Ghana and the United States.
International recognition
Dr Akamani’s work eventually extended well beyond SIU.
His university profile lists him as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Sustainable Forestry and records his involvement in major national and international environmental assessments.
Among them were the United Nations Environment Programme’s Global Environment Outlook 7, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services assessment and the United States’ Fifth National Climate Assessment.
He received SIU’s Early Career Faculty Excellence Award in 2016 and the University of Idaho College of Natural Resources’ International Alumni Achievement Award in 2023.
His international profile continued to grow. In June 2026, just months before his death, Dr Akamani was elected to a three-year term as Secretary General of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS).
A story bigger than the tragedy
The circumstances surrounding Dr Akamani’s death have understandably dominated the headlines, but his life story extends far beyond the events of September 19.
His journey illustrates how education and perseverance can transform opportunities for a young person who begins life with limited financial resources.
From a day student in Ghana whose family reportedly struggled to finance his education, he progressed through teacher training and university education to postgraduate studies in Europe and the United States—and ultimately became a full professor and internationally recognised scholar.
For his surviving family, the loss is particularly painful. Moment of Wisdom understands that both of Dr Akamani’s parents are still alive, meaning the parents who watched their son’s long educational journey and international achievements must now confront the death of their child at only 48.
Investigation and court process continue
As additional details emerge, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain subject to an active criminal case.
Some reports and social-media discussions have already advanced claims about what may have led to the incident. Those claims should be treated cautiously unless established through verified evidence or court proceedings.
The judicial process will ultimately determine criminal responsibility.
For now, Ghana has lost an accomplished academic whose work connected his country of birth with an international career in environmental science, forestry and sustainable development.
His death is tragic.
His achievements, however, deserve to remain part of the story.
From humble beginnings in Ghana to the lecture halls of Southern Illinois University, Dr Kofi Akamani’s educational journey was an extraordinary one.
Moment of Wisdom GH TV extends its condolences to his parents, children, wider family, colleagues, students and friends.
May his soul rest in peace. 🕊️
