One of the greatest mistakes we can make in life is to judge people from a distance without taking the time to know them personally. Sometimes, a single conversation can change years of assumptions.
A social media personality known as Mr. Happiness recently shared that he had the honour and privilege of spending time with His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana. According to him, listening to the President explain his vision for Ghana completely changed his perspective.
He wrote:
“After listening to him and understanding his vision for our country, I can honestly say that I take back every negative word I may have said about him. His vision for Ghana is unmatched. It is not built around short-term applause or political convenience; it is a long-term plan for the future of our nation.”
Those words should encourage every Ghanaian to appreciate the importance of listening before reaching conclusions. Whether one supports President Mahama politically or not, there is value in engaging with ideas before forming judgments.
At Moment of Wisdom GH TV, we believe democracy flourishes when citizens ask difficult questions, examine policies, and hold leaders accountable. However, accountability should be driven by facts, evidence, and respectful dialogue—not by personal attacks or derogatory language.
This is why we have consistently appealed to social media commentators, including well-known political commentators and influencers(Kelvin Taylor, Captain Smart, and Twene Jonas), to elevate the standard of public discourse. We welcome robust criticism of politicians, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and other public figures when it is based on facts and reason. What concerns us is when criticism is overshadowed by insults or language that distracts from the substance of the argument. Loud Silence Media on my mind.
A strong point does not become stronger because it is wrapped in abusive language. On the contrary, disrespect often weakens an otherwise valid argument.
Ghana’s democracy needs courageous voices that challenge those in authority. But courage should be accompanied by wisdom. It is possible to criticize a president without insulting him. It is possible to question a traditional ruler’s decision without disrespecting the institution. It is possible to disagree with a religious leader without attacking the person’s dignity.
Respect and accountability are not enemies; they are partners in building a mature democracy.
The testimony shared by Mr. Happiness also reminds us that personal encounters often reveal dimensions of leadership that headlines and social media debates may never capture. While every citizen has the right to support or oppose political leaders, our opinions should always be informed by facts rather than emotion or prejudice.
As Ghanaians, let us continue to debate passionately but respectfully. Let us replace insults with ideas, anger with analysis, and hostility with constructive engagement. That is how nations grow.
The future of Ghana will not be determined by who shouts the loudest, but by who offers the wisest solutions.
