Recent comments by media personality Kelvin Ekow Taylor concerning His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II have generated considerable debate among Ghanaians both at home and abroad. As a platform that values wisdom, respectful dialogue, and constructive criticism, Moment of Wisdom GH TV believes it is important to share our perspective on this matter.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is not merely a traditional ruler of the Ashanti Kingdom. Over the years, he has established himself as a respected statesman whose influence extends beyond traditional boundaries. Successive governments under Ghana’s Fourth Republic have consulted and engaged him on matters of national importance. His role as a unifying figure and advisor in times of national difficulty has been widely acknowledged.
Former President John Dramani Mahama himself has publicly spoken about the valuable support and counsel he received from Otumfuo during challenging periods of his administration. This demonstrates that the influence of the Asantehene goes beyond partisan politics and reflects his commitment to national development.
For this reason, we were surprised by some of the comments directed at Otumfuo following his intervention in the industrial action involving doctors at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Whether one agrees or disagrees with the King’s position, there is a respectful manner in which such disagreements can be expressed.
Criticism is an essential component of democracy. Public officials, traditional leaders, religious leaders, politicians, and institutions should be open to scrutiny. However, criticism should be based on facts, reason, and evidence rather than language that many people may perceive as disrespectful or unnecessarily provocative.
At Moment of Wisdom GH TV, we have consistently maintained that freedom of speech should be exercised responsibly. The right to express an opinion is fundamental, but that right also comes with a responsibility to promote constructive dialogue rather than deepen divisions.
We had hoped that the public controversies surrounding previous legal disputes involving Mr. Taylor would encourage a shift toward a more analytical and issue-based style of commentary. Ghana needs strong voices that can challenge authority, expose wrongdoing, and hold leaders accountable. However, such goals are best achieved through intellectual debate, factual analysis, and persuasive arguments.
Many Ghanaians appreciate Kelvin Taylor’s ability to raise important issues and challenge the political establishment. Nevertheless, some observers believe that the effectiveness of his message is sometimes weakened by the tone and language used in delivering it. When discussions become overly personal, attention often shifts away from the substance of the argument.
As Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has often reminded Ghanaians, political power is temporary. Traditional institutions, on the other hand, have endured for centuries and continue to play an important role in maintaining social stability and cultural identity. This reality calls for a level of mutual respect between political actors, commentators, and traditional authorities.
The larger question facing Ghanaian media today is whether public discourse should be driven by outrage or by thoughtful analysis. Our view is that the nation benefits more when commentators focus on evidence, policy discussions, and constructive solutions rather than personal attacks.
Moment of Wisdom GH TV therefore encourages all media personalities, bloggers, politicians, and public figures to promote a culture of respectful engagement. Ghana’s democracy will be strengthened when disagreements are expressed with dignity, facts, and wisdom.
Moment of Wisdom; Time for Wisdom.
