The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has commenced construction of a GH¢2.44 million two-storey Breast Care Centre at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), marking a significant investment in specialised healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region.

The project is intended to strengthen breast cancer services at one of Ghana’s major referral hospitals, where the demand for screening, diagnosis and treatment remains a major public health concern.

A sod-cutting and site-handover ceremony was held at the hospital on Monday, 19 October 2026, bringing together government officials, traditional authorities and hospital representatives.

According to published project details, the new facility is valued at GH¢2,442,959.20 and is being financed through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

M/S Astee Company Limited has been named as the contractor, with a projected completion period of ten months.

The investment represents an important collaboration between the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and KATH, aimed at expanding the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised breast healthcare.

Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to improving public services and urged the contractor to complete the project within the stipulated period.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene emphasised the importance of early detection and improved access to treatment.

According to figures he presented, KATH records nearly 1,700 suspected breast cancer cases annually, with approximately 14 per cent confirmed through histological examination.

He expressed concern that many patients seek medical attention only after their conditions have reached advanced stages.

The Regional Minister also outlined national ambitions to increase early-stage breast cancer detection, reduce delays in diagnosis and improve access to multidisciplinary treatment.

These concerns highlight why investment in specialised healthcare infrastructure must be accompanied by public education, accessible screening and timely medical intervention.

The ceremony brought together prominent traditional leaders, including Bantamahene Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI and Kokofuhemaa Osagyefo Kusiwaa Mua Baayie II.

Their participation underscored the importance of collaboration between government, traditional institutions and healthcare providers.

Traditional leaders welcomed the investment while emphasising the need to make breast cancer services affordable, particularly for patients who may struggle with the financial burden of diagnosis and treatment.

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital serves patients from the Ashanti Region and several other parts of Ghana.

The proposed Breast Care Centre is expected to build on existing breast healthcare services and provide additional dedicated space for patient care.

For patients and their families, improved infrastructure could mean better access to specialised services and a more supportive treatment environment.

However, the project’s ultimate success will depend on more than completing the building.

The facility will require appropriate equipment, qualified healthcare professionals, reliable maintenance arrangements and sustainable financing to deliver the intended benefits.

The Breast Care Centre forms part of a broader programme of healthcare infrastructure development across the Ashanti Region.

Dr Amoakohene disclosed that 96 health facilities were under construction across various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the region.

He identified other KMA-supported projects, including a paediatric clinic at the KMA Health Centre and a health facility at Moshie Zongo.

He also referenced the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory project at KATH, work at the KNUST Medical Centre and developments concerning Sewua Hospital.

The reported projects reflect ongoing efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure, although their individual completion stages and operational readiness will require continued monitoring.

Moment of Wisdom GH TV welcomes investment in healthcare infrastructure, particularly projects that address diseases responsible for considerable suffering among Ghanaian families.

Breast cancer is not simply a medical statistic. Behind every diagnosis is a patient, a family and a community confronting emotional, physical and financial challenges.

A dedicated Breast Care Centre can become a valuable public asset if it improves access to timely diagnosis and treatment.

Nevertheless, public officials must ensure that the project delivers measurable benefits.

The following priorities deserve attention:

  • Timely completion: The contractor should meet the agreed schedule without compromising construction quality.
  • Financial accountability: Project expenditure and progress should remain transparent.
  • Equipment and staffing: The completed building must be adequately resourced.
  • Affordable services: Patients should not be prevented from accessing care because of financial hardship.
  • Long-term sustainability: Maintenance and operational funding should be planned before commissioning.

The public should also receive periodic updates on construction progress.

The commencement of the GH¢2.44 million Breast Care Centre at KATH is an encouraging development for healthcare infrastructure in Kumasi.

The collaboration between the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, hospital authorities, government representatives and traditional leaders demonstrates the potential value of coordinated public investment.

However, the true achievement will not be measured by the sod-cutting ceremony or the size of the project budget.

It will be measured by the number of patients who receive timely, affordable and quality healthcare when the facility becomes operational.

For the women, men and families affected by breast cancer, that is what meaningful development must ultimately deliver.
